Acupuncture is a type of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been practiced for thousands of years, and involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body. Today, acupuncture is becoming increasingly popular, and is used to treat a wide range of illnesses.

TCM acupuncture is a holistic approach to health and illness. It aims to improve physical, emotional, and spiritual well being.

What is acupuncture?

TCM acupuncture embraces o very different philosophy from that of conventional medicine. According lo TCM theory, we all have Qi, which means energy or ‘life force’, flowing through our bodies. Our health and well being Is said lo rely on the smooth and balanced flow of Qi through o series of channels [meridians) that lie beneath the skin, while illness is thought lo occur because of too much, too little, or blocked Qi.

Inserting fine needles into specific points, known as acupuncture points, on the meridians is believed to stimulate the body’s own healing responses and help restore its natural balance. Sometimes pressure or lasers, lather than needles, are used on the points, and in some conditions the points may be warmed using a technique called moxibustion.

TCM treatment aims to improve your overall well being and to reduce the symptoms of your condition. People often find that acupuncture can lead lo increased energy levels, better sleep, and a sense of good health, as well as helping with their specific problem.

Conventional health professionals are also using acupuncture techniques. However, they tend to apply the techniques on the basis of o conventional medical diagnosis, believing that acupuncture may work by stimulating the nerves in skin and muscle to produce a variety of effects on the body’s hormones, nervous system, muscle lone, circulation, and immune system. Their treatments lend to focus on bringing about the relief of specific symptoms.

Acupuncture needles are very fine, so people usually just feel a slight prick; they do not hurt in the same way as needles used to give injections or take blood. Once a needle has been inserted it is usually left in place for about 15-20 minutes.

While the needle is in place, it shouldn’t hurt, in fact, you may not feel anything or you may feel a tingling or dull ache around the needle. Some TCM acupuncturists try to bring on a sensation called ‘de Qi’ at the point of the needle by moving (manipulating) the needle when it has been inserted. This may cause on unpleasant feeling. Most people feel relaxed and sleepy during a treatment.
